Interactivity #2

The phonograph forever changed music from a service industry to a commodity based one.

  1. I really like the picture you found for this interactivity. I think it's pretty sweet how they captured the phonograph in a music setting, which it obviously should have been in, and how it looks like either someone's house/studio, possibly a place to record, or even a music classroom. I like how the room is set up where it looks like someone is going to record also. The phonograph was an awesome invention, and I agree with you, it definitely changed music from a service industry to a commodity based one. It definitely changed/impacted music.

  2. It's known when the phonograph was invented that Sousa went to Congress and said that "these singing machines" would ruin music, as instead of people sitting together and singing or playing the popular songs of the day together, these "infernal machines" would do it instead.

In a sense, the phonograph did turn the general public into consumers of music, not practitioners. It used to be if you wanted to listen to music, you had to perform it yourself.

Although, I think with the advent of affordable laptops, garageband, tablets, and whatnot, that we're starting to enter a new era of accessibility and content creation.

    Thanks for reading.
